The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation Cyber Initiative has generously provided **$1,000,000** in additional support for the Institute for Security and Technology (IST) for 2022. This funding will allow the organization to expand its work designing solutions to enhance the security of the global commons.

IST forges crucial connections across industry, advocacy, and government to solve emerging security risks before they make real-world impact. Our funders, including the Hewlett Foundation, enable the Institute to continue developing tools and insights for companies, organizations, and governments to outpace emerging global security threats.

“Support from philanthropies is essential to advancing policy and technical solutions to better secure information systems globally. We are grateful for the Hewlett Foundation’s ongoing support and excited to keep up the momentum in combating ransomware and other national security threats.” said Megan Stifel, Chief Strategy Officer at IST.

This support will help fund the Institute’s ongoing work to build out its Democracy and the Geopolitics of Technology practice area, and its cybersecurity-focused work–including the Ransomware Task Force. The Hewlett Foundation’s grant will also allow the organization to expand and bring on several new senior level staff.

“As a Silicon Valley-based think tank with a deep understanding of Washington’s policymaking process, IST plays a critical bridging role while working on some of the most pressing cybersecurity issues of the day, including their vital work on ransomware,” said Kelly Born, Director for the Hewlett Foundation Cyber Initiative. “We’re proud to be able to support them.”
