Telethon Kids Institute staff also reviewed this page prior to publication. Open Philanthropy recommended a grant of $5,300,000 over three years to the Telethon Kids Institute, which is affiliated with the University of Western Australia, to support work led by Professor Jonathan Carapetis to develop a Strep A vaccine. Strep A infections, the causal agent of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, lead to approximately 500,000 annual deaths. This funding is intended to support a Phase I clinical trial of the vaccine. This falls within our work on scientific research, specifically within our interest in advancing human health and wellbeing.
