American University — Solar Geoengineering Initiative
Verified[Global Catastrophic Risks] Open Philanthropy recommended a grant of $200,000* to American University to provide startup funding for an initiative, led by Shuchi Talati, focused on solar geoengineering. The new organization will work on building solar geoengineering governance capacity in the Global South, and help NGOs in the US engage in related policies. It will not advocate for or against solar geoengineering, but will work to center justice in deliberations, as well as inform and provide resources to policymakers and NGOs. This falls within our work on mitigating global catastrophic risks. The grant amount was updated in October 2024. *Half of this amount went directly to Talati's organization, which is no longer sponsored by American University.
