Overview

Mustafa Suleyman co-founded DeepMind in 2010 with Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, where he led the Applied AI division responsible for product partnerships, healthcare applications, and ethics. After leaving DeepMind in 2019–2022 under contested circumstances, he founded Inflection AI in 2022 and launched the Pi personal chatbot. In March 2024, Microsoft brought most of the Inflection team — including Suleyman — in-house under a licensing arrangement valued at approximately $650 million, and Suleyman became the inaugural CEO of Microsoft AI.

His 2023 book The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-first Century's Greatest Dilemma (Crown, 2023) makes the case that AI and synthetic biology together constitute a "coming wave" of technologies whose proliferation will be difficult to contain and which will require novel governance institutions. The book has been widely reviewed in both technology and policy press.
