# European AI Office

The European AI Office is the centre of AI expertise across the EU, that promotes the development and deployment of AI solutions that benefit society and the economy.

The European AI Office supports the development and use of trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI), while protecting against risks. It was [established within the European Commission](https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/commission-decision-establishing-european-ai-office) as the centre of AI expertise and forms the foundation for a single European AI governance system.

The AI Office supports the [EU’s approach to AI](https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/european-approach-artificial-intelligence), playing a key role in implementing the [AI Act](https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/european-approach-artificial-intelligence)– especially for general-purpose AI – guaranteeing the health, safety and fundamental rights of people and providing legal certainty to businesses. It enforces the rules for general-purpose AI models and supports the governance bodies in Member States in their tasks. This is underpinned by the powers given to the Commission by the AI Act, including the ability to conduct evaluations of general-purpose AI models, request information and measures from model providers, and apply sanctions. The AI Office also promotes an [innovative ecosystem](https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/ecosystem-ai-innovation-europe) of trustworthy AI, to reap the societal and economic benefits.
