Overview
The Foresight Institute is a nonprofit research organization and think tank founded in 1986 in San Francisco by Christine Peterson, K. Eric Drexler, and James C. Bennett. History
Founding and Early Years (1986-1990s)
The Foresight Institute was founded in 1986 by Christine Peterson, K. Eric Drexler, and James C. Bennett. Drexler, who pioneered theoretical work on nanotechnology, provided the founding vision centered on molecular manufacturing — the construction of atomically precise products using molecular machine systems. Many of the Institute's initial members came from the L5 Society, a space advocacy group, and sought a more focused organization dedicated to nanotechnology.1
The Institute hosted its first nanotechnology conference in 1989, establishing itself as a convening organization for the nascent field. In 1991, with funding from tech entrepreneur Mitch Kapor, it created two suborganizations: the Institute for Molecular Manufacturing (IMM) and the Center for Constitutional Issues in Technology. IMM remains active as a separate nonprofit entity focused on atomically precise manufacturing; as of 2024-2025, IMM continues to publish research and collaborate with Foresight on molecular manufacturing workshops.9 The Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology was established in 1993, named after physicist Richard Feynman and inspired by his influential 1959 lecture "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom."1
The 1990s saw several milestones for the organization. In 1994, the Institute ran what it describes as one of the world's first prediction markets. In 1997, it hosted what it describes as the first serious discussion of artificial general intelligence (AGI) — a claim that is contested given that formal AGI discussions predate this event (Turing's 1950 paper, the 1956 Dartmouth conference, etc.); the Institute may be referring specifically to the modern framing of existential risk from AGI rather than AGI as a research concept. In 1998, co-founder Christine Peterson introduced the term "open-source software" to the software community in its modern sense, at a strategy session convened in response to Netscape's announcement that it would release its browser source code.10
Expansion and Rebranding (2000s-2010s)
In 2004, Peter Diamandis, founder of the X-Prize Foundation, was selected to chair the Feynman Grand Prize committee. The Institute briefly changed its name to "Foresight Nanotech Institute" in 2005, before reverting to its original name in June 2009.1
Recent Evolution (2020s)
The COVID-19 pandemic prompted the Institute to move its programs online in 2020. The organization has increasingly oriented itself toward AI safety and related technology areas. Norm Hardy Prize
A $10,000 award recognizing advances in usable security, named after computer security pioneer Norm Hardy. In 2025, Dr. Pardis Emami-Naeini won for developing a layered cybersecurity label for smart home devices that reportedly influenced national policy and industry standards, including the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark.15
Fellowships
The year-long Existential Hope Fellowship supports early-career scientists and engineers working on frontier technologies. Fellows receive mentorship, access to workshops, seminar group membership, priority access to AI Nodes, and quarterly career counseling. Tech Trees and Roadmaps
The Institute develops interactive "technology trees" — roadmaps of fields that identify key actors, bottlenecks, and opportunities. AI Safety Work
The Foresight Institute's AI safety work focuses on areas it describes as underexplored relative to traditional alignment research. The Institute has stated a view that AGI timelines may be short — on the order of one to three years. This position is substantially shorter than central estimates from major forecasting aggregators: as of early 2026, Metaculus community forecasters assign a 25% probability to AGI by 2029 and a 50% probability by 2033, with medians of 2027 for "weakly general AI" and 2033 for a first general AI system.19 The Institute has not published the reasoning supporting its one-to-three-year estimate. AI safety-specific program documentation describes four core categories; these represent a narrower framing than the seven research areas listed in the Grants section above, focusing exclusively on AI safety applications and omitting longevity biotechnology and molecular nanotechnology.20
Security technologies for AI-relevant systems includes securing infrastructure against AI-related threats, automated red-teaming, vulnerability discovery, cryptographic coordination tools, and hardened hardware approaches. Neurotechnology to enhance or compete with AGI encompasses brain-computer interfaces, whole brain emulation, and using neural data to strengthen human cognition. Safe multi-agent scenarios covers tools for transparent human-AI interactions, detecting collusion and deception, and game theory for positive-sum dynamics. Automating research and forecasting focuses on open-source tools for AI-enabled scientific workflows and scalable forecasting for safe AGI development.20
The Institute's evaluation process involves multi-layered reviews with experts reportedly drawn from organizations including GovAI, Carnegie Mellon, OpenAI, and the Future of Humanity Institute. A white paper from 2018, "Artificial General Intelligence: Coordination & Great Powers," was authored by Allison Duettmann alongside researchers from GoodAI, the Future of Humanity Institute, the Future of Life Institute, and the Center for Human Compatible AI.21
The Institute also published a report identifying 208 initiatives for reducing AI risk, highlighting priorities including faster execution, better coordination, shared standards, and stronger operational capacity.15
The Institute's focus areas — particularly whole brain emulation and neurotechnology as near-term AI safety tools — represent a minority position within the broader AI safety field. Most mainstream alignment research prioritizes approaches such as Interpretability, RLHF, and Scalable Oversight. According to Foresight Institute's own posts on LessWrong and the EA Forum, mainstream AI safety funders deprioritize WBE because of concerns that such research could accelerate AI capabilities development, speed up the arrival of transformative AI, or yield technology applicable to less safe AI systems — concerns about dual-use risk alongside uncertainty about technical feasibility.22 As of early 2026, no published cause-area writeup from any major funder formally declining WBE as a funding priority was identified in available sources.
Whole Brain Emulation Endowment
A dedicated fundraising effort has raised approximately $2.3M toward a $20M target. The endowment is intended to support fast grants to unblock promising WBE research and to fund a $20M grand prize for achieving the first complete human brain emulation. Three financial figures appear in available sources and measure different things: the $856,909 in grants recorded by ProPublica covers fiscal year 2023, when the AI safety grants program had just launched (August 2023); the $3.7M in total functional expenses reported in the 2024 Form 990 covers all programs across all focus areas; and the $4.5--$5.5M is the Institute's self-reported annual AI safety grant funding figure as of early 2025, reflecting subsequent program growth. These three figures are not directly comparable and represent different time periods and program scopes.73
The organization's revenue trajectory has grown substantially from very modest levels — total contributions were reported at just $12,000 in 2011 and $1,500 in 2012.
